Teacher’s Day 2020
"If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants"
The importance of mentors for a career in surgery is far too underrated. Starting in the early years of this decade, I was lucky to be guided by an unending string of some of the best teachers in Surgery, Osmania and Gandhi could offer.
From igniting an interest at case discussions and OT procedures during MBBS with NVN sir to guided hands-on anastomosis/thyroidectomy by Sreedhar sir, from learning the nuances of laparoscopy / good life by Chary sir to learning god-level patience / procedural skills of neurosurgery from Prakash sir, I am deeply indebted.
One common theme I found with all of them was the deep interest in the job, insane procedural skills, knowledge of surgical anatomy and incredible work ethic, early ward rounds compared to peers (I was literally running to the wards at 6/7 AM!).
Of course, at times it was difficult to live up to the task when your boss expects nothing but the best. But I guess that's how we learn, by constantly setting the bar higher.
Thank you, near sirs for making me what I am today.
